Social Alchemy Explains… Facebook

with 3 comments

Each week I’ll be explaining a term or an area of social media.  If there’s anything you’d like me to feature, feel free to drop me an e-mail to michaela@fuelledbysocialalchemy.com.

Facebook: “Helps you connect and share with the people in your life” (taken from facebook.com)

What’s the catch?
Generally speaking, there isn’t one.  Since founding in 2004, Facebook has been one of the biggest internet successes – apparently, “the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users” in 2009 (source).  It is an open platform for conversation, hosting pictures and videos, creating groups and events, playing games and even selling!

In the last year or so, there’s been a lot of controversy regarding their privacy regulations and the direction they’re taking the platform; however, any company who’s mission statement includes promoting “openness and transparency by giving individuals greater power to share and connect” surely offers no boundaries?

In my opinion, Facebook is a fantastic networking tool and should be utilised in all business promotion campaigns!

In the next few weeks I’ll be offering tips ‘n’ tricks on how to use facebook effectively – so, keep an eye out!
